After earning his degree from Tokyo's Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering in 1970, he joined Honda's research department, focusing initially on exhaust emissions. In the mid-1980s, as Honda intensified its involvement in Formula 1, Goto transitioned to the racing division.
