A graduate of the Faculty of Theatre and Film at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Mara Iulia specialized in Film Studies, combining rigorous academic training in film theory with hands-on filmmaking experience. Their work reflects a deep understanding of cinema as both an art form and a medium for cultural expression. Mara Iulia made their directorial debut with a short film that showcases a passion for storytelling and dedication to the craft. Collaborative projects during their university years further honed their skills in narrative development and film production, offering invaluable experience in bringing complex cinematic visions to life. Driven by curiosity and a love for cinema, Mara Iulia engages with both traditional and experimental approaches to filmmaking. They have contributed to film criticism through platforms such as the TIFF Film Festival and Liternet, enriching their appreciation for diverse cinematic styles. Influenced by movements like the French New Wave and Cinema du Look, as well as directors including Gaspar Noé, Gregory Colbert, Emir Kusturica, Andrzej Żuławski, and Elem Klimov, their work often explores themes of existentialism, surrealism, and the human condition. Their current project delves into symbolic realism, telling the story of a resilient yet solitary woman who embodies the struggles and strengths of women in Romania across past and contemporary eras. Through careful visual composition, symbolic imagery, and a poignant score, the film seeks to evoke deep emotional resonance. A sequel is planned, continuing the exploration of the protagonist’s transformative life journey with a minimalist yet profoundly expressive approach.
